Francisco Torres, Javier Cabanillas & Friends
Grammy-winning trombonist Francisco Torres and dynamic conga player Javier Cabanillas join forces to deliver a unique blend of Latin jazz, steeped in Afro-Caribbean rhythms and jazz improvisation. Their music takes you from traditional Latin roots to fresh, innovative sounds that push the boundaries of jazz.
Francisco Torres, a distinguished trombonist and arranger from Hermosillo, Sonora, discovered his love for jazz trombone by chance in high school, a passion that set him on a remarkable musical path. Starting on alto saxophone before exploring tuba and euphonium, he eventually honed his craft at Fullerton College and Cal State Long Beach, performing as a featured soloist in works like Carnival of Venice and Bolero. His early experiences paved the way for a dynamic career blending classical precision and Latin jazz expression.
Known especially for his work in Latin jazz, Francisco has spent over a decade as musical director and arranger for Grammy-winning percussionist Poncho Sanchez. His extensive collaborations include performances with Arturo Sandoval, Aretha Franklin, and Santana, as well as recording for top orchestras and TV shows like The Simpsons, Coco, and Dancing with the Stars. His studio work spans genres and icons, contributing to projects for Disney parks, major films, and artists like Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Michael Bublé.
Mexican conga player Javier Cabanillas has had a remarkable journey, evolving from performing in pop-up flea markets on the streets of Tijuana to becoming a Grammy-winning artist. Now a Bay Area resident, Javier took the spotlight in 2014, walking the red carpet in Los Angeles and winning a Grammy for Best Latin Tropical Album with the Pacific Mambo Orchestra—a recognition that solidified his place in the world of Latin jazz.
Following that major milestone, Javier channeled his energy into creating and arranging for his own group, the Cabanijazz Project, which has gained acclaim for its innovative blend of jazz harmonies and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. His compositions have earned a prestigious 4-star rating in Downbeat Magazine, appeared in a Showtime series in 2023, and streamed widely on NPR and United Airlines. Through his work, Javier continues to redefine the boundaries of Latin jazz, captivating audiences with his rhythmic mastery and distinctive sound.
